The Process
Made by hand
Original slab — 50–75mm thick
→ hand butched
2–3 pieces, <25mm each
Handcraft
One slab becomes
two or three pieces
A raw phyllite slab — cut to size at 50–75mm thickness — is placed on the work surface. A craftsman strikes along the natural cleavage planes of the stone, splitting it from the edges into 2 or 3 thinner pieces. Each piece carries the fractured face on one side: rough, layered, and completely natural.

Surface Character
The rock face texture
Natural Rock Face
Hand-split · No machine finishing
The exposed face of each rock face piece is entirely the product of the butching process — the stone fractures along its natural planes, leaving a raw, three-dimensional texture that catches light differently at every angle. No tool touches the face after splitting.
Every piece has a unique surface — depth, shadow, and texture vary naturally
The rough face dramatically improves grip for wall mortar application
Phyllite's natural sheen is visible even on the fractured face
Colour: grey to deep charcoal — consistent from a single mine source
No sealant required — phyllite is naturally non-porous and weather-stable

Wall Cladding Layouts
How it can be laid

Rock face pieces are primarily used for wall cladding. The layout pattern you choose dramatically changes the visual character of the finished wall — from structured and architectural to raw and organic.

Horizontal Stack
Pieces laid in straight horizontal courses. Clean, linear, and contemporary. The most common layout for modern architecture and feature walls.
Best for — contemporary facades, feature walls, boundary walls
Offset Courses
Horizontal courses with each row offset by approximately half a piece length. Creates a natural, coursed-stone look with subtle movement. The most visually rich single-layer layout.
Best for — heritage buildings, rustic exteriors, garden walls
Vertical Stack
Pieces stacked vertically in straight columns. Creates a dramatic, elongated visual — makes walls appear taller. Striking on entrance pillars, porch columns, and narrow wall sections.
Best for — pillars, columns, narrow accent walls
Random Ashlar
Pieces of varying lengths arranged in an organic, non-repeating pattern. Requires a skilled mason to balance the layout, but the result is the most natural-looking finish — like a dry-stone wall.
Best for — natural gardens, farmhouse exteriors, organic design projects
Diagonal (45°)
Pieces laid at a 45-degree angle. Bold, unusual, and highly architectural. Creates strong visual movement along a wall. More material wastage — factor 15–20% extra. Best suited for accent panels, not full facades.
Best for — accent panels, feature sections, interior walls
Herringbone Wall
Alternating vertical and horizontal pieces in a repeating V-pattern. Sophisticated and traditional. Particularly effective for entranceways, porch walls, and anywhere a classic architectural statement is desired.
Best for — entryways, porch walls, formal garden structures
